I don't usually celebrate my birthday. I don't get birthday cake or any presents in my birthday but this time was a bit different. My students prepared a birthday party for me and it was a surprise one. They are all nomads in SL but they managed to set a room in a sandbox. They decorated it and they prepared presents that they built themselves. The happy birthday letters were very touching. I can imagine the amount of time they used to prepare it. Thank you all kiddos
It wasn't just lots of creativity, it was also lots of work, dedication and patience from my grade 5 and 6 students. They spent hours with their team to plan the script, to hunt for places and costumes for best shot, to edit the snapshots, to add text, to make them into flip book in SL and to exhibit it to the world.
Would people still dare to say that they didn't learn anything just because they were having fun doing it? Would people also still dare to say that they didn't socialize because they were in front of their computers?
I don't always reach what I plan teaching in SL. My students are always full of surprises. Watch the video and you will know what I mean.
I don't usually give quizes to my students because our curriculum requires them to analyze more than just to answer multiple choice questions. But Quiz-O-Matic in second life is too good to miss. I bought the Quiz-O-Matic from DoctorPartridge Allen for 95$L (not a freebie alright) but it was all worthed. Modifying the quiz script is so easy and I can set our own pass standard. Additionally, every time my students pass the quiz, they can get a present that will pop up the machine. I can give away any presents I like. Results are automatically shown in the local chat and emailed to my personal email address. My students love this gadget. :))
It is unimaginable before, being with my students afterschool hour with just a single click. Time is a scarce resource in our school and I have been struggling to keep up with the rigorous science curriculum in just 175 school days/year. How good it is to be able to 'see' them inworld. The sense of presence in 3D world is not replaceable by any other media in 2D platform.
Our science learning is integrated in the web. Well, we are not using MOODLE yet because my students think that the moodle layout is boring. Instead, they all have their individual website which is connected to each other and to me. This time my students are doing their assignment using their self made media on prim. I helped them rez the screen on NcWebiee campus sandbox (that they called grassbox) and they did their work inworld. Cool, eh? (Sorry I didn't tell you earlier that we are going to you use the sandbox, Aedann Slade. I Hope you don't mind. Thank you from all of us )
