I have to admit that I knew almost nothing about Open Sim (OS). I heard many times that many educational sims were migrating to open sims because Linden Lab decided not to give discounts to educational sims but I was not interested in OS at all. I have been so comfortable teaching and learning in Second Life that I refused to change. My students have been learning in Sciland, Nanoland and Illinois State University sandboxes for free so I didn't bother to think that it was free because other people had to bear the cost of maintaining sims in Second Life.

I skipped any information about OS, including Kitely, I got from my Facebook group. Then yesterday, I was involved in a dispute with my friend, James O'Reilly (;p). He thought that it was time for me to learn about Open Sim, especially Kitely. I thought that accessing Kitely was nerve wrecking and the whole idea of Open Sim was a waste of time. I was wrong.

As soon as I discovered my own way of accessing Kitely from my Facebook account-YES, you access Kitely from your Facebook account-, I was inside Kitely virtual world in no time. (James, admit it! Your Kitely instruction is brilliant but not user friendly) My first Kitely experience was in James's sim. Not enough being in someone's else island, I created my own sim for free.

Here's how you can access my sim in 3D virtual world Kitely if you do not have SL viewer in your computer:
1. Download and install this Second Life viewer - Viewer for advanced resident is recommended: http://secondlife.com/support/downloads/?lang=en-US
2. Login your Facebook
3. Go to this link and click LOGIN with Facebook button: http://www.kitely.com/virtualworld/Ines-Puspita/Deutsche-Internationale-Schule
4. Download and install Kitely plugin as it pops up.
5. Click ENTER WORLD
6. A warning window will pop up, choose ALLOW access.
7. Second Life viewer will load and you will be logged in automatically.
How simple is that?

I have so many things to learn about Kitely. Hmm....Open Sim is a very interesting species indeed. No wonder more and more people buzz about it. Having my own sim is like a dream come true to me. Now I can fulfil my students' dream of having their own house or appartment in the school complex. I still fall in love with Second Life, the great builds, the people, the networks, but I will give Open Sims a chance.

Go to www.kitely.com to learn more about it.

(Thank you for the FEUD James O'Reilly)

Fantastic! Breathtaking!

The space shuttle Atlantis finally launched last night (Friday, July 8, 2011 at 8:26 am SLT) both in Kennedy Space Center in Florida and Kennedy Space Center in virtual world Second Life. It was a historic event because the launch of Space Shuttle Atlantis was ultimate last in NASA's fleet. It was also historic because for the first time in the history of mankind such event was mirrored via a virtual launch inside a virtual world at a syncronized time.

It was an honor for me and my students to be able to witness this event and be part of a history. We learned together at the site. http://www.nasa.gov/externalflash/135_splash/index.html
Yes, I didn't know much about the Atlantis but it was okay because teacher and students could learn together. :))

I got a panic attack in RL when the count down was halted at T-31 seconds. The launch held in RL and so did in SL because there was a milestone in Kennedy Space Center in Florida. At 8:28 am SLT the clock restarted and the count down continued. Finally both Space Shuttle Atlantis blasted off from Florida and Second Life at 8:29 am SLT.

This was truly a bittersweet moment. It was the last space shuttle mission but also the first mission to carry iPhone into International Space Station. So I hope my students will learn that the end of one thing might be the start of another bigger thing.

I thank my friends Chenin and Steve for inviting us (we saved flight trips to Florida and didn't have to compete for best spot with milliion other RL spectators) and for preparing such a marvelous creation in virtual world. ( Look just how realistic is their work in Second Life compared to this: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/18424716#43659943

This is a MAGNUM OPUS.

I have always been having a dream of becoming an archeologist since I was a child. I often imagined myself discovering mysterious artifact from the past like TinTin by Herge. :D so I didn't want to miss the chance when I got a group notice from Science Circle about this class "Introduction to Archeology"

The class was special. Not because I was sitting by two animals, the wolf and the hoot, but it was because the lecturer was my dear friend Astronomer Somerset. It was great to hear his British accent for more than an hour. I felt like being with Harry Potter...seriously. Well, I did get what was being lectured.

Thank you Astro. It was a great class.

Okay, I have been wondering about this for a while. "Is there such things as book writers, pulishers, and bookshops in Second Life?" I knew there was a readable and realistic 3D book inworld. As I had my spring break, I started my quest to fid information about this. Thanks to Shambelsguru, I got the landmark of Book Island. The name sounds promising, doesn't it?

It does! Book Island is like a dream come true to me. Here you can find books for sale, publishers and of course book writers. There are weekly events in the island such as Writer's Support Group and Book Chat. It's really exciting talking about books in such a relaxing garden. It is indeed better than 2D browser based book chat.

Being a book writer in physical world, I know exactly that many brilliant ideas cannot be published by publishers because the cost of producing and publishing a book is high. This fact discourages creativity and productivity. If adults have to face a gazillion obstacles in sharing their ideas in a book form, let alone young people.

In 3D virtual world, these obstacles can be minimized. The cost of producing a 3D book which is as good and realistic as physical book is almost NOTHING. The marketing outreach of this 3D books is worldwide. Renting a space for a bookshop in the island costs only  L$ 550 a week. (around US$ 2.2 / Rp. 20.000) . We will never have that luxury in physical world.  We can be a book writer, a publisher and a bookshop owner all at once in Book Island.

I can't wait to bring my students' works inworld.

Think twice. Virtual class is cool. ;)

University of Delaware did it again. ;)

They simulcasted their Global Agenda Talk from their physical - atomic based campus in Delaware, US to their virtual - pixel based campus in Second Life. This time the speaker was Marwan Muasher, vice president for studies at the Carnegie Endowment, where he oversees the Endowment’s research in Washington and Beirut on the Middle East. Muasher served as foreign minister (2002–2004) and deputy prime minister (2004–2005) of Jordan.

The topic of the session was "View from the Arab World". He talked about various issues from democracy to desalination, from monarchy to education in Arab world. He mentioned about Indonesia (yay! my country ^^) as a moslem country that was successful in promoting democracy.

Why is Second Life simulcast is more interesting than video talk like www.ted.com or any LIVE streaming video technology? First of all, because unlike others, live simulcasting a video into Second Life allows us to be 'there' with other virtual/physical audience. The sense of presence is stronger in 3D technology. Then, this technology also allows live interaction between the virtual audience with the physical speaker who is being simulcasted.

I cannot wait to attend other Global Agenda Talk in Second Life. http://www.udel.edu/globalagenda/2011/Global_Agenda_2011/Home.html
It's great to be able to learn from the history maker him/herself in addition to other sources and it costs us no more than an internet connection. Love it!

BioInformatics class with Alfa Roux aka Guiseppe Russo Ph.D. (Research Assistant Professor, Director, Cancer Systems Biology and E-Health Programs, Temple University, Philadelphia, USA)

*Ingin punya*

Hari ini saya belajar banyak. Thanks Jen and Josain.

Pada tanggal 10 Maret jam 3.45 subuh, president World Bank, Robert B. Zoellick berbicara mengenai 'Global Agenda' di Second Life.

Bagaimana tanggapan World Bank mengenai hal itu?" Wuih.... kritis sekali pertanyaannya.

Selama sesi tanya jawab berlangsung, beberapa peserta mulai mengeluarkan papan-papan demonstrasi.

Just a click away.....

I love ART. So when my friend Marcel told me about an art exhibition by Indonesian Maestros in NCftB Art Space, I teleported instantly. It was exciting to see the works of Affandi, Raden Saleh and Sudjojono and learn about these artists' biography. I saw these physical works of art a few months ago at Indonesian Fine Art Museum. It took me three hours to go to the museum from my house in a jammed Jakarta. It took me just 2 seconds in Second Life..hee hee
